"How Can Sonar Map a Hidden Surface?" Lab

What a fun lab yesterday with the 8th graders.  Although, a slinky was sacrificed for it.  The students discovererd the basic principles of how sonar is used to determine the distance from the surface of the ocean to the ocean floor.  Remember...divide by 2!!

Couple Weeks of Happenings in One Shot

We did a lab looking at different physical and chemical changes.  We learned to always, always, always do the baking soda and vinegar experiment in a sink.  No matter the quantity of ingredients or container or the assurance in the textbook!  We almost had a counter full of wet science journals and textbooks.

 

Sometimes there are so many projects and activities going on in the classroom at once, Mrs. Nelson's desk needs to be cleared in order for projects to be completed.  Hey...a good way to get my desk cleaned off...unfortunately, I just stack the "stuff" somewhere else only to be placed back onto my desk at the end of the day.

 

 

The 6th graders completed a lab proving that air does have mass and volume...thus, matter.

 



What a fun activity!!  The 5th graders started a unit on space with the first lesson about the solar system.  With the help of the 6th graders we measured (much smaller scale, of course) out the planets from the sun.  As you can see Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are easy to see from the sun (Mrs. Nelson with the camera).  If you look closely you can identify Jupiter, Saturn (thanks 5th grade dad for your help, too), Uranus, Neptune, and in the very blue...way, way in the back is the dwarf planet, Pluto.

 

How does a teacher sometimes answer algebra questions in 2014?  Via text messages.  Amazing to think our 8th graders in Yankton, SD are being taught by a teacher in North Dakota.  Technology makes it possible for our kids to take pretty much take any class they desire!

 

Learning how condensation, evaporation, and precipation relate to weather.
