Fossils, SYATP, and Leaves

The 5th and 6th graders were fossil investigators earlier in the week trying to determine what made the imprints.  They had to take measurements and draw sketches of what they saw.  They determined the imprints were made by a twig, shell, two different sized starfish, rock, and a pine cone.

Our textbook says, "By studying fossils, scientists have learned that most of the organisms that have ever lived-over 99% of them, in fact - are now extinct; which means that God has created up to 200 billion separate species."  WOW...what an amazing, creative God we have!

The seventh graders did an excellent job of leading our See You At the Pole this past Wednesday.  What beatiful morning and what a great turnout!

The 5th and 6th graders began a unit this week on the 'DIVERSITY OF LIVING THINGS'.  We did an introductory activity having to come up with a classification system for leaves brought in by each student.  They met their objective...now, on Monday, Mrs. Nelson is going to bring in some "special leaves" to test their classification system...we will see how it goes.

Also, our 5th and 6th graders will be going back in time to the early 1900s this week.  Check back for photos.  We are all excited about this field trip!!

Lab, Library, and Crafters

The 7th graders had a lab this week dealing with yeast.  There was a few hungry comments made because the room did smell like bread when we were done.  Thankfully, lunch was next in the lesson plans.

I am treated to visitors during my prep time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The 1st/2nd graders come in my room to check out books from the school's library.  I so enjoy seeing their smiling faces and hearing their warm, "Hello, Mrs. Nelson!"

Mrs. Kotalik is going to turn our 3rd and 4th graders into some pretty accomplished crafters before May.  I was able to grab these 3rd graders with their creations before they headed out for the weekend.  What cute seasonal decorations for their homes!

Got 'Em

My mother-in-law with Bea and Fred for Grandparents' Chapel.

Middle school students did a great job getting things ready for our "Pancakes for Hope" breakfast on Wednesday.  The oj had to get mixed up!

There was service with a smile Wednesday morning!

Got 'em!!  The seventh graders found their way onto the blog this week.
It took flipping pancakes to get them on film.

The 5th/6th science lab required some calculations on Friday (average time).  This student took the lead by grabbing the marker and showing his classmates what needs to get done.  It is fun as a teacher to sit back and let them run the show...well, just for a little while maybe!

ReCap of This Week's Activities

Experiments are always fun...especially when they involve fire.

Working with a heated test tube of water and a beaker full of cold, colored water...no, not Kool-Aid.

Team work is important...one doing and one observing carefully.

Technology is an important tool at MVCA.  Students are researching explorers who helped increase our knowledge of Earth.

Hmmm...the 7th graders seem to be missing these past two weeks...perhaps camera shy?  I'll make sure to capture them this week!!

Photos from the 1st Week of School

Taking something round and making it flat is...kinda hard!

Carefully drawing the properlines on the orange.

Mr. Van Ginkel was here from Hope Haven International to talk about their ministry.  The MVCA middle school students will be leading a service project this school year to help raise funds to purchase wheelchairs for children around the world in need.

I captured this photo of a tornado north of my house.  1st time I've seen one.

Already have the 5th and 6th graders making careful observations and determining if it is quantitative or qualitative data.

The MVCA students, staff, and parents joined together Wednesday morning for prayer to properly start the school year.  A great turnout for (I'm sure) a great school year.
